Is there beauty in the cityscape? In Japan you will find vending machines on almost literally every streetcorner, and even more fascinating: in the middle of nowhere. Yana searches for harmony in the complex, often chaotic urban environment.
Everyday Japan
The subject of vending machines (in Japanese 'jidouhanbaiki') is part of Yana's overall theme 'everyday features in the urban environment'. In 2017 Yana traveled through Japan where she documented vending machines. It started on Okinawa, where she saw a row of vending machines standing in a park. This created a dissonance because she had just visited a a shrine and was enjoying a walk along the beach in the twilight. It seemed as if the vending machines were just dropped there by an alien species.
