About This Project

Japanese sacred space

Moving through various scapes such as a shopping mall, paddy fields, highways or alleyways, it’s almost as if each one of them pushes us into a certain role. The role of a customer, one of admiration and respect, one of being responsible and alert, one of being pious and the list goes on. For Yana it becomes interesting when different meanings exist in one space.

Torii gate
It's easy in Japan to pass by the many small altars and shrines that lie criss cross over the land. In nature, the countryside as well as in the city. The torii gates however are difficult to overlook due to its size and geometrical shape. These structures mark the transition from the secular world to the sacred world. Fascinated by the geometrical shape and the meaning they give to space, Yana started to paint this ongoing series only after she noticed the overhead power lines, traffic mirrors and other everyday features nearby. Both the aesthetic and the dissonance are characteristic in Yana's paintings.
